Babile is a province in eastern Ethiopia, 550 kms from Addis Ababa, close to the Somali border. It is best known for its Elephant Sanctuary. 80% of the population of the district live in the countryside and work small farms.

For its first project in Babile Alchemy World selected nine young people from Banile town and surrounding villages. Following their initial training five members of the group obtained employment in Government offices and three were helped to establish a small business. The three, all girls, were Helen, raised by a single mother with seven brothers, Fantaye – also raised by a single mother with three sisters all of whom married at an early age to provide support for the family, and Hindo whose father left home when she was young and hasn’t been seen again. Hindo’s mother acts as a broker between farmers and merchants to find the money to raise her six children.

As part of their training the girls developed a plan to set up a secretarial business and using funds donated to Alchemy World by Webmart Charitable Trust some basic equipment was obtained and the business was established with a disused container as an office. The business has now been running for over a year providing income for the three families and acting as an excellent example of what can be achieved by these young people with just a little help. The photo shows Hindo & Helen in their ‘office’. They continue to receive advice and guidance from Alchemy World.
